    A Different Take

If you’ve been following this blog you probably have seen the launch branding I did for TTD London. The nice chap in charge of the club decided he wanted some 3D design done, which isn’t something I currently offer without outsourcing, but apparently they found somebody who offered 3D and was local, so I have no further work for them. It’s not really a problem, I’ve been extremely busy with new and existing clients and I was cutting them some very low-priced deals so financially there’s no worry there, but I was enjoying the style and ideas behind the work.

Anyway, the poster above is TTD’s new replacement launch party poster, using the new designer’s recreation of my logo in 3D. It’s quite bizarre to be looking at it – it’s my logo, and yet it isn’t. There’s a viral video ad floating around on the net too featuring the 3D logo spinning around over your typical club music scene footage.

My opinion of it all? Well, it’s all professional and put together well, I like the placement of ‘London’ inside of the letter D, I like the gaps between the letters now (though it makes the ‘hidden meaning’ a little less subtle) I like the logo in a chunkier format and obviously it is powerful in 3D, but I find it rather cheesy and hackneyed. I doubt I’d be alone in thinking I’ve seen this same poster many times before, and I’ve always believed that the way forward is to be unusual and surprising, not to just fit in with everybody else. I can’t say I like the squared stencil type, I much prefer the block-type I used for the original (still present for the ‘Shaking Up Sundays’ tagline), but it is admittedly more legible in parts (I had previously used Helvetica for any of the smaller type or harder-to-read sections).

If TTD wish to follow the fads rather than create them, that’s no problem, some businesses prefer to fit in rather than stand out, but hopefully my logo design will survive all the cliches and still stand out nicely.
